Situation

Supporting NHS staff through the pandemic meant recruiting coaches at scale, and quickly, into a context where the people being supported might be traumatised.

Goodwill was not the constraint: over 2,000 people applied. The constraint was knowing, defensibly, which of them had the skills the role demanded.

Intervention

Working with multiple stakeholders, we researched and developed a key skills framework for coaching in medical contexts where trauma is a risk.

We then turned it into a selection tool that could be applied consistently across a very large pool of applicants.

Result

The tool was used to select 500 coaches from a pool of over 2,000 applicants.

The framework was endorsed by all of the national coaching bodies.
